Geographical Indications

The purpose of Geographical Indications is to ensure high quality standards of agricultural products for consumers. Thanks to the related product specification documents, consumers can access all important information about production methods and and characteristics, adding value to Geographical Indications.

Do you know the meaning of POD, PGI and TSG?

Let’s explore the Geographical Indications world

PDO – Protected Designation of Origin

A Protected Designation of Origin is a name which identifies a product: originating in a specific place, region or, in exceptional cases, a country; whose quality or characteristics are essentially or exclusively due to a particular geographical environment with its inherent natural and human factors; the production steps of which all take place in the defined geographical area. In Italy, there are currently 578 Protected Designation of Origin, specifically 170 for agri-food products and 408 for wine and spirits.

The Process

Geographical Indications enhance the quality production in the territories of Italy. The main purpose is to support producers for their efforts in providing a selection of top-quality products. Geographical Indications generate beneficial effects for the regional and national economy.

The protection of Geographical Indications requires a combined effort of networking within the Italy System. The Ministry works together with Regional and European Administrations and with the supply chain players.

The process is triggered by the Industry Players, that are involved in the production supply chain, through the establishment of an Organizing Committee. During the process the Ministry works together with the applicant Committee and the involved Regions. The European Commission makes the final decision. Inspection Bodies and Protection Consortia, according to their functions, will then follow the growth and development of the Geographical Indication.

The awarding of Geographical Indications is the result of collaboration between private and public actors and represents a guarantee, to consumers, for the high level of products quality and value in terms of DOP, IGP and STG.
