How to register an agri-food PDO or PGI

The procedure for the recognition of an agri-food product as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) or as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) entails an effort by the Ministry to create synergies between producers, associations, regional authorities and the European Commission. The specific phases of the procedure, both at the national and the European level, are described by the law, which qualifies subjects entitled to apply and indicates the documentation to be produced.



How to register a PDO or IGP wine product

Wine products can be registered as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), divided into DOC (Controlled Denomination of Origin) and DOCG (Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin), or as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) which includes the traditional IGT (Typical Geographical Indication) mention.

Protection Consortia play a key role in promoting, protecting and enhancing Protected Denominations of Origin. For this reason, the Ministry envisages a specific procedure to recognize (representativeness, status and organization, modality of presentation of the application, etc.), to maintain, and to renew their status.
